Only one painting by Vincent Van Gogh is known to have been sold during his lifetime. It is called "The Red Vineyard" or "The Red Vines" (1888), and it was sold in Brussels in early 1890 for 400 Belgian francs (approximately $2000 in today’s money). Vincent’s brother, the art dealer Theo van Gogh, suggested that six of his paintings be exhibited in Brussels.
Anna Boch purchased “The Red Vineyard” just a few months before Van Gogh’s death.
What is remarkable is that his art became well-known worldwide after his death, and he is now regarded as one of the most famous artists of all time.
